Review: Sunday Lunch at The High Field

img_2448The High Field opened in September 2014 and has quickly gained a fantastic reputation within Birmingham as a quality gastropub, winning Birmingham’s Best Gastropub at Birmingham’s Food, Drink and Hospitality Awards this year. The restaurant is located in leafy Edgbaston, a stone’s throw away from Birmingham city centre, on the aptly named Highfield Road. It is next door to COMiDA @21, opposite Simpson’s, the Michelin-starred restaurant, and near the cocktail lounge and boutique hotel, The Edgbaston. The High Field is owned by Peach Pubs, which refer to themselves as a collection as opposed to a chain and run a group of gastropubs in Warwickshire, Oxfordshire and further afield, each with their own distinctive atmosphere.

The High Field is set in a stylish, white villa-type building and is beautifully light and airy inside. It features luxurious seating areas set around a central square bar as well as an open-plan kitchen. The restaurant also features an open patio area perfect for Summer evenings.

The High Field prides itself on using UK-based artisan food suppliers wherever possible. For Sunday Lunch expect all the classics done to perfection: Aubrey’s Dry-aged Rump of Beef, Cornish Leg of Lamb or Jimmy Butler’s free-range Leg of Pork all priced at £15. Expect large and light yorkshire puddings, proper roast potatoes and gravy galore. The restaurant also caters to the vegetarians out there with their take on the Vegetarian Wellington or the classic Nut Roast. Although unnecessary due to generous portion sizes, feel free to add sage and onion stuffing or cauliflower cheese. What is unique about The High Field is their family-style take on serving up food. Even more roasties or yorkshire puddings? No problem. The servers come round offering more for the taking!

If you’ve still got room for dessert, I recommend the Sticky Bourbon Pudding and Jude’s Vanilla Ice cream.
