Review: Italian cuisine at Gusto

img_2383

Gusto, one of several namesakes around the country, is one of the latest establishments to grace the Birmingham restaurant scene. The restaurant is located in the newly refurbished Grand Hotel, next door to the popular cocktail bar, The Alchemist, which is owned by the same chain, Living Ventures. The first thing noticeable is the European-inspired architecture living up to the building’s ‘grand’ history. The restaurant itself is Italian and gives off a classy, chic air with the decor to match. It is large, catering for 130 covers, but still manages to retain it’s intimate atmosphere; you’ll find Gusto’s signature olive trees adorned with glistening lights making an appearance in every corner. The restaurant also boasts of an outdoor terrace.

If you’re looking for somewhere romantic, this restaurant should be high on your list. It has a fantastic ambience and the service is excellent.

img_2393In terms of the menu, you’ll find all of your Italian classics plus many more, guaranteeing that there is something on the menu for everyone. Pizza, risotto and pasta dishes are very reasonably priced compared to your typical pizza chains. The meat and seafood dishes are slightly more expensive and you should be prepared to order a side dish as well. The restaurant also caters to vegetarians with dishes such as the Sweet and Sour Aubergine Steak amongst the pizza and pasta offerings, however it would be useful to see these denoted with the vegetarian symbol (v) on the menu.

We opted for the Pan Roast Duck Breast with cannellini bean purée, caramelised chicory and ginger and Slow Cooked Pork Belly with fried gnocchi, pork crackling, apple sauce and red wine jus. As mentioned previously, expect to order side dishes with these main courses. The Pork Belly was a large portion indeed and both dishes were cooked to perfection.
