Review: Peruvian cuisine at Andina

Andina provides a different take on what one tends to describe as tapas, serving up Peruvian cuisine in the heart of Shoreditch.   Ceviche’s second branch brings delicious new flavours and ingredients from South America.

The restaurant comprises of two floors with an exposed kitchen allowing you to watch them cook you up a treat. The entire menu being in Spanish (with English descriptions) and the staff speaking the language adds an authentic touch.

They describe themselves as serving:

“Healthy food and drinks inspired by the Peruvian Andes”

The menu is highly varied from the grilled items including duck, octopus and scallops to the fresh unusual components including palm hearts, popped amaranth and golden berry. If you haven’t tried Ceviche before, here is the place to do it with over five different types on the menu. Ceviche is a seafood dish popular in Central and South America; fresh raw fish cooked in citrus juices. The tapas dishes themselves could be a lot larger considering the price however it’s the quality and fresh ingredients you’re paying for.

The main event of the drinks menu is the Pisco Sour. This cocktail originated in Lima, Peru and comprises of Pisco (the base liquor) and adds lime juice, sugar syrup, egg white, Peruvian Chuncho bitters. Trust me it tastes better than it sounds! In terms of food, the highlight for me was the Chanco con Mani pictured below – do not miss it!

As well as fantastic food and drinks, the service was pretty top notch too. The total bill came to around £70 for two including a cocktail each and the five dishes pictured above. For all you brunch-lovers they do a delicious Peruvian take on that too! The group have just opened up another branch, Casita Andina, in Soho which I’m sure will live up to their reputation.
